This session brought together leading voices from the indie sector: Ruth Barlow (UK): Director of Live Licensing, <a href="https://beggars.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-mce-href="https://beggars.com/">Beggars Group</a> / Chairperson of <a href="https://www.aim.org.uk/#/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-mce-href="https://www.aim.org.uk/#/">AIM</a>; Dario Draštata (Croatia): Executive Director, <a href="https://hr.dallas.si/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-mce-href="https://hr.dallas.si/">Dallas Records</a> / President of <a href="http://www.runda.online/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-mce-href="http://www.runda.online/">Runda</a> &amp; Chair of <a href="https://impalamusic.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-mce-href="https://impalamusic.org/">Impala</a>; Jan Willem Kaasschieter (NL): CEO, <a href="https://www.artonemusic.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-mce-href="https://www.artonemusic.com/">Artone</a>; Johann Audiffren (France): A&amp;R/Marketing Manager, <a href="https://www.believe.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-mce-href="https://www.believe.com/">Believe</a>. The discussion explored key themes surrounding the identity, challenges, and opportunities for European indie labels today.<h3>What independence means in today’s industry.</h3>The session began with a fundamental question: What does independence mean in today’s music industry? Ruth Barlow provided a powerful reflection:“Being independent for me is doing things on your own terms, and I think that chimes with a lot of artists these days. Obviously, we know that the Trojan horses are out there—they’ve always been out there—in the sense that major labels have been masquerading as independents for years, buying us all up and the rest of it. But from my perspective, with Beggars and the labels I represent, the people who run those labels have relationships with their artists that are built on mutual respect and true partnerships. They nurture artists for a long time; it’s not just about numbers, hits, or all that stuff. We’ve got some great stories in our labels. Take someone like Sampha, who I think is one of ‘the’ singers and songwriters of his generation—it took him eight years to deliver a record. Would that have happened in a fast-paced, bonus-driven environment where everything is about having a hit? That’s Young and Caius’ approach: incubating a group of really talented people who work with each other and are part of something bigger than just profits or scale. We’re about creating art and contributing to culture. That’s what true independence is for me. Music isn’t just about making money; it’s about putting something back in.”Dario Draštata added that maintaining genuine independence often requires advocacy on behalf of the sector. He highlighted the work of Runda and Impala in ensuring indie labels have representation and protections across Europe. The panellists agreed that independence is about prioritising artistry and culture over the commercial imperatives that often drive major label operations.<h3>Distinctive approaches of indie labels.</h3>The discussion shifted to the strategies that set indie labels apart. Ruth explained how Beggars nurtures artists over time, prioritising creative freedom rather than short-term returns. Johann and Dario illustrated how understanding local markets enables indie labels to thrive and resonate with their audiences. Jan Willem detailed how Artone leverages direct-to-consumer (D2C) models to create sustainable financial and artistic ecosystems. These approaches demonstrate the adaptability and resilience of indie labels in an increasingly challenging landscape.<h3>Collaboration as a strength.</h3>Collaboration was a recurring theme. Dario described how Runda fosters cooperation across Balkan labels to amplify their collective impact. Johann spoke about the need for international collaboration to promote diversity and equality. Jan Willem shared how Artone’s infrastructure supports cooperative efforts among indie labels. These collaborative efforts highlight the strength and community spirit within the indie sector.<h3>Sæfari’s reflections.</h3>One of the attendees, Icelandic singer-songwriter <a data-mce-href="https://saefari.com/music" href="https://saefari.com/music" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sæfari</a>, shared his impressions after the session:“It would’ve been easy for the panel to moan about the difficulties and adversity they had endured in recent times and the amount of work in front of them to keep going, but instead, they were full of fire and inspiration, speaking about the most important thing of all, the nurturing and development of future artists. The panellists encouraged indie labels to adopt innovative approaches while staying true to their principles. Ruth reinforced the importance of culture and creativity, reminding the audience that these values remain at the core of the indie identity.<h3>Closing thoughts.</h3>The ESNS panel highlighted the resilience and adaptability of indie labels. Recently, I watched Better Man, the Robbie Williams biopic. During Take That’s heyday in the 1990s, I was in my 20's and quick to judge. Like many, I dismissed Robbie as “the twat in the band” (sorry).The film deeply moved me, not just because of his story, but because it made me realise how much I had overlooked back then—his struggles, his challenges, and the pressures of fame at such a young age. Seeing the intensity of his experiences made me think about how judgemental youth can often be. It also brought to mind how today social media amplifyies these snap decisions, turning fleeting impressions into relentless scrutiny.Someone recently posted, “In 5 years, the 1980's will be 50 years ago,” and it stopped me in my tracks. That was a shocker. I’ll be 60! It’s a reminder of how quickly time passes and how important it is to pause and give people a chance.I liked 'Better Man' so much that I want to see it again. It’s stayed with me ever since, playing on my mind in the same way Liam Payne’s tragic passing did last year. His loss made me think deeply about how easy it is to focus on someone’s missteps, blunders, or how they might irritate us while overlooking what they might be struggling with privately. These moments remind us that our judgment often misses the bigger picture.One line from the film resonated deeply: “The age you become famous is the age you stop evolving.” Robbie joined Take That at 15, and the pressures of fame shaped his life in ways that weren’t visible to the outside world. His story is a powerful reminder that what we see on the surface rarely tells the whole story.<h3>Hidden stories at a karaoke bar.</h3>The idea of hidden stories isn’t new to me. Last year at Tallinn Music Week, I found myself captivated for nearly four hours at a karaoke bar hosted by Singa (thank you!). Watching people take the stage, the songs they chose, and the courage some had to muster to sing was incredible. Many poured their hearts into their performances, with a mix of raw emotion and sheer enthusiasm that felt like a window into their inner worlds. And then there was the crowd—electric, supportive, and feeding off the energy of the performers. That night, a rendition of Cha Cha Cha by Käärijä lit up the room with an intensity that was almost tangible. Zombie also had everyone singing passionately along in unison, creating a powerful, shared connection. It was nothing short of unforgettable. It’s also about being open to those from different cultures, backgrounds, and ways of thinking. Whether it’s someone from another country or someone whose life experience differs from ours, staying curious and withholding judgment creates space for understanding. When we approach others with openness, we’re far more likely to uncover the richness and complexity in their stories and even connect in unexpected ways.As we kick off a new year, it’s worth reflecting on how we approach the people around us. In the music industry and in life, it’s easy to make assumptions. He's a music consultant with a rich background in publishing and A&amp;R, specialising in catalogue optimisation, artist development, business and A&amp;R support, startup guidance, project management, and mentoring. We developed two proposals that reflect our shared expertise and interests: one focuses on freelancing and the other on music publishing.Our two submissions bring practical insights to the table. The workshop, Thinking about becoming a music publisher: Start here, is designed for those curious about music publishing and offers clear, actionable guidance on how to get started. The panel, Thriving as a freelancer in the music industry: Turning skills into success, explores how freelancers can build sustainable careers by leveraging their skills and adapting to the industry’s challenges.Joining us for the freelancing panel submission is <a data-mce-href="http://www.bernardoqueiros.com" href="http://www.bernardoqueiros.com">Bernardo Queirós</a> a marketing, events management, and partnerships specialist with a decade of experience in the music and cultural sectors. Bernardo is currently working with organisations spread across the globe. He started at an early age as an independent concert promoter and has been, since then, walking his path non-stop throughout various strands of the industry. Managing their international promo schedules was not simply a logistical task; it called for building trust and nurturing mutual respect. I quickly realised that success wasn’t just about keeping things on track. It came from treating the band as partners, understanding their needs, and showing up consistently and reliably. Ensure your comments and contributions reflect your true perspective and add value. Thoughtless or overly generic interactions can come across as insincere, weakening connections instead of strengthening them. Being mindful and genuine in your online presence invites meaningful discussions that encourage valuable connections to re-engage. An active, authentic approach keeps your network dynamic, adaptable, and ready for new opportunities.4. Collaboration as a trust-building toolSpending time working together—whether with colleagues or clients—builds trust that extends far beyond any single project or role. In the music industry, we weave in and out of each other’s lives, often reconnecting in different capacities over the years. This has been true for me since my time at Fintage House, Roadrunner Records, and Songtrust. I’ve worked with the same people across different roles and companies, and I make it a point to stay in touch, seeing them when I’m in their part of the world if I can, or at least touching base regularly.These long-standing connections are built on shared experiences—collaborating on projects, navigating challenges, and supporting one another through various stages of our careers. Mutual respect and a history of reliability turn those moments into lasting relationships. When we reconnect, it’s like picking up where we left off, with trust already established and new opportunities waiting to be explored.Collaborating on panels, workshops, projects or joint ventures showcases your skills,commitment and dependability. These interactions evolve into meaningful partnerships that stand the test of time. Engaging with professionals from varied backgrounds and musical styles has added depth to my network, sparking collaborations that wouldn’t have emerged within a single circle.Expanding my network has opened doors for me and created opportunities to support others. It has allowed me to spot potential connections and pathways that help others in their pursuits. When you know people across genres and geographies, you become a bridge—able to connect the right people, suggest partnerships, and share insights that benefit the whole network. <h2>An ode to network optimisation &amp; monetisation.</h2><h3>A short story about a music hub.</h3>Four years ago, Georges Perot, the visionary behind <a data-mce-href="https://hemimusichub.com/" href="https://hemimusichub.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">HEMI - Hub for the Exchange of Music Innovation</a>, invited me to mentor for this European initiative supporting artists and music professionals in Central and South Eastern Europe. I had some mentorship experience, but HEMI was a pivotal step. As I prepare for the <a data-mce-href="https://www.linecheck.it/" href="https://www.linecheck.it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Linecheck Conference</a> in Milan, I have been reflecting on my journey. We’ll meet for a farewell to HEMI next week after three transformative years: mentors, mentees, and partners celebrating a period defined by network growth, optimisation, and monetisation. Moderated by Mandy Salem-Aubry, the panel featured insights from Fatiha Ben Brahim, a business consultant and copyright &amp; royalty leadership coach; Guillaume de Lavenère, co-founder of Claimy; Albert Gruber, co-founder of Seeqnc; and Richard Kurka, co-founder of Aurismatic.The discussion focused on key themes such as identifying gaps in current monitoring systems, innovative technological approaches, and the critical role of collaboration within the industry. Each panellist presented unique perspectives on how their companies address the challenges of music usage tracking and royalty distribution. The consensus emerged that no one company can solve all complexities alone; rather, the future lies in collaborative efforts among platforms to create a syndicate of technologies that effectively meet the evolving needs of the industry.Since the panel, the discussion has continued with even more enthusiasm as we explore the potential of working together. Addressing the gapsIn follow-up conversations, Guillaume de Lavenère from Claimy reflects on how traditional systems still fall short. He states, “The music industry is moving beyond outdated declarative systems towards precise, real-time tracking of music usage.” Guillaume continues to emphasise that transforming large data sets into actionable insights is essential to help rights holders maximise their catalogue value.Albert Gruber from Seeqnc also shared his post-event thoughts on the challenges in monitoring live performances and DJ sets. “With increased monitoring, the expanding data can overwhelm smaller or non-tech companies,” Albert explains. He stresses that simplifying this data is crucial to ensure fair compensation for artists and greater efficiency in reporting.Richard Kurka, co-founder of Aurismatic, continues to emphasise the need for better live performance tracking. “Our technology excels in identifying live music at events like festivals, ensuring fast and fair royalty distribution for artists and organisers alike,” Richard states, reiterating the importance of automating setlist reporting to reduce errors and improve speed.Adding new voices: VollouAndres Payne of Vollou was already brought into the panel discussion by Mandy from the audience and has now joined the ongoing conversations post-event. Vollou’s app-based solution modernises setlist reporting for DJs and venues, and Andres’ input aligns closely with the broader themes that emerged. Vollou’s focus on replacing manual processes with a streamlined digital approach continues to resonate as a vital innovation across all areas of music reporting.Andres notes, “Moving away from manual reporting is essential, as it reduces errors and ensures faster, fairer royalty distribution for DJs and performers alike.” His perspective reinforces that technology and collaboration can bring about real change.Collaboration as the path forwardAs our discussions have evolved post-panel, it’s become even more apparent that the future of music monitoring depends on collaboration, not competition. Each panellist highlights their company’s unique strengths, but all point to the potential power of working together.Richard Kurka of Aurismatic suggests, “By combining the best technologies from smaller, specialised companies, we can create comprehensive solutions that cater to all aspects of music recognition.” Guillaume de Lavenère from Claimy agrees, adding, “Data needs to be transformed into actionable insights, and this is where collaboration can make all the difference.” Albert Gruber from Seeqnc echoes these sentiments, noting how collaboration could create a more cohesive ecosystem for rights holders, ensuring a more efficient and transparent system for all.A unified future: The road aheadThe continued dialogue after the panel has generated excitement about the potential for a syndicate of music recognition technologies.
