Without them, even the most talented professionals can find themselves navigating an uphill battle.

An optimised network goes far beyond personal advantage; it lays the groundwork for shared opportunities, collaborative projects, and collective progress across the industry. Purposeful connections mean everyone involved can tap into a pool of shared resources, knowledge, and support. This interconnected approach strengthens the network, making it more resilient and adaptable. By investing in mutually beneficial relationships, you contribute to an industry where growth and innovation are fuelled by the strength of its connections.

Building trust: Lessons from the road

One of the most powerful lessons I learned about network building came during my time at Roadrunner Records, working with Slipknot. Managing their international promo schedules was not simply a logistical task; it called for building trust and nurturing mutual respect. I quickly realised that success wasn’t just about keeping things on track. It came from treating the band as partners, understanding their needs, and showing up consistently and reliably. This approach turned what could have been a standard professional connection into a deeper, effective partnership.

Strategies for real network optimisation

1. Build with purpose

Don’t fall into the trap of growing a network just for numbers. Instead, approach new connections with curiosity. Ask yourself: how can this relationship create mutual value? Focus on building authentic interactions where both parties gain insight or support.

2. Stay engaged beyond the introduction

I’ve found that meaningful engagement comes from consistent, thoughtful interactions. Whether it’s sending an article that might interest a contact or reaching out for a catch-up chat, these moments reinforce the idea that the relationship is not just transactional. A network thrives on shared conversations that go beyond an initial meeting. These regular touchpoints help convert one-time connections into lasting relationships.

3. Digital presence with purpose

Maintaining an active digital profile is important for keeping your network engaged and relevant. Visibility alone isn’t enough; it’s about contributing thoughtfully and showing genuine involvement in the industry. Regularly sharing insights, posting updates, and interacting with others online broadens your network’s reach and reminds peers and colleagues of your expertise and focus.

However, it’s important to get the nuance right. Ensure your comments and contributions reflect your true perspective and add value. Thoughtless or overly generic interactions can come across as insincere, weakening connections instead of strengthening them. Being mindful and genuine in your online presence invites meaningful discussions that encourage valuable connections to re-engage. An active, authentic approach keeps your network dynamic, adaptable, and ready for new opportunities.

4. Collaboration as a trust-building tool

Spending time working together—whether with colleagues or clients—builds trust that extends far beyond any single project or role. In the music industry, we weave in and out of each other’s lives, often reconnecting in different capacities over the years. This has been true for me since my time at Fintage House, Roadrunner Records, and Songtrust. I’ve worked with the same people across different roles and companies, and I make it a point to stay in touch, seeing them when I’m in their part of the world if I can, or at least touching base regularly.

These long-standing connections are built on shared experiences—collaborating on projects, navigating challenges, and supporting one another through various stages of our careers. Mutual respect and a history of reliability turn those moments into lasting relationships. When we reconnect, it’s like picking up where we left off, with trust already established and new opportunities waiting to be explored.

Collaborating on panels, workshops, projects or joint ventures showcases your skills,commitment and dependability. These interactions evolve into meaningful partnerships that stand the test of time. This ongoing cycle of reconnecting, working together, and staying in touch ensures your network remains strong, adaptable, and ready for the next chapter.

5. The magic of a broad network

Networks thrive on variety. Throughout my career, I’ve connected with people across different genres, from electronic music to heavy metal, and in all corners of the world—from Africa to India, Asia, the MENA region, to Europe and the Americas. These connections have introduced perspectives and opportunities I couldn’t have predicted. Engaging with professionals from varied backgrounds and musical styles has added depth to my network, sparking collaborations that wouldn’t have emerged within a single circle.

Expanding my network has opened doors for me and created opportunities to support others. It has allowed me to spot potential connections and pathways that help others in their pursuits. When you know people across genres and geographies, you become a bridge—able to connect the right people, suggest partnerships, and share insights that benefit the whole network. This diversity enriches your professional landscape, creating relationships that leads to shared success and innovation.

Reflecting on real-life successes

One of my most impactful experiences came through my role as a mentor in the HEMI (Hub for the Exchange of Music Innovation) Incubator programme. By investing in the relationships within this network and helping connect individuals who might not have otherwise crossed paths, we built a platform where emerging artists, industry professionals, and music entrepreneurs could find new opportunities and collaborate effectively. This experience reinforced that a network optimised with intention becomes far more than just a list of contacts—it transforms into a dynamic resource that fuels growth and innovation for everyone involved.
